One crew missing, two hurt in drilling vessel fire in Miri, Malaysia

The drilling vessel MV Geos caught fire in Kuala Bram, injuring two crew members and leaving one missing.

Miri District 13 Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Capt Maritime Md Fauzi Othman said the two injured crew members were second engineers Muhammad Hafiz Ismail, 36, who sustained 20 per cent burns and Khairul Isma Ismail, 35, who was injured on his forehead, lips and face.

“Both victims were given early treatment and at 7.40 am they were brought to the Miri Hospital for further treatment,” he told a media conference here today.

Fauzi said the identity of the missing crew member could not be disclosed at the moment and search and rescue efforts were still ongoing.

“There were 39 crew members on board the vessel during the incident, including five Indonesian nationals and a Thai national with 38 survivors and one still missing,” he said.
