OTC Asia: Reshaping and redefining the energy industry are keys to sustainability
Industry leaders from ExxonMobil Production Company, ONGC, Petronas, Royal Dutch Shell, Schlumberger and TechnipFMC came together recently at the Offshore Technology Conference Asia (OTC Asia) which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The oil and gas industry has a long history of responding to opportunities and challenges in a highly volatile environment defined by geopolitics, crude price movement, and the development of resources in frontier areas. Asia’s dynamic energy landscape offers unique opportunities for the industry to reshape and redefine itself, to ensure long-term sustainability.
The industry leaders discussed how best practices and norms need to be fully evaluated whilst seeking fit-for-purpose, affordable and innovative solutions. The focus was on key lessons learnt, new and effective approaches to adopt, and how best can the industry adapt to the new oil price environment.
Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib, Executive Vice President and CEO, Upstream, Petronas maintains that collaboration and technology sharing help organisations leverage their strengths, fill in skill and technological gaps, drive long-term growth and remain competitive in the global market while ensuring that the industry get the best out of the situation and is headed into the right direction and focus.
According to Andy Brown, Upstream Director, Royal Dutch Shell, “Standardisation and collaboration are needed in the oil and gas industry so supply chain can provide a better service.”
The OTC Asia addressed a broad spectrum of topics including market competitiveness, FLNG, autonomous operations and the impact of big data during its programme on Tuesday, 21 March. The conference also featured discussions on current trends; and sessions into on-going major regional projects, and market outlooks; as well as a multi-disciplinary programme including geoscience, deepwater, subsurface and surface engineering, facilities, construction, and more.
The inaugural Distinguished Achievements Awards recognised major technological, humanitarian, environmental, and leadership contributions to the industry in the region. Simon Ong was honoured with the Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals for his contributions to the offshore sector; Petronas was presented the OTC Asia Distinguished Achievement Award in recognition of their ground-breaking PFLNG Satu project; and for Special Citations, Datuk Abdullah Karim for his outstanding leadership and key role in delivering the PFLNG Satu project, and Michael Utsler was recognised for his achievements as a technical pioneer, inspiring leader and dedicated mentor.
The Spotlight on New Technology SM Awards recognised and showcased the latest and most advanced hardware and software technologies that are propelling the industry into the future. The 2018 winners are represented by ConocoPhillips, Halliburton, Schlumberger, TechnipFMC, Weatherford and NGL Tech.
