Protests spark anew on China mining operations

CHINA – The mining operations in a Tibetan-populated region of Qinghai Province have been met with new rounds of protest against mountain deforestation and waterways pollution caused by complicity between mine owners and local and central government officials.

According to reports, Tibetan villagers are protesting the mining work in the Tsojang (or Haibei) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, but have been blocked by close ties between mine owners and higher authorities. The mining site has been found to be rich in deposits of iron, copper, and lime.

Likewise, payments of 100,000 yuan US$16,090 for Tibetan nomads for the use of their land have also been denied.
