HydroJeel awarded EUR30 mn German grant for green ammonia project in Morocco

Morocco’s HydroJeel, a green hydrogen and green ammonia venture of Innovx, a multi-sectoral impact business builder and a subsidiary of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), has been awarded a EUR30 million German grant to advance a large-scale green hydrogen-to-ammonia initiative in the country, which it is developing on behalf of Casablanca-based phosphate-based plant and animal nutrition solutions provider OCP Group.

The funds were granted to the Jorf Hydrogen Platform under the Power-to-X (PtX) Development Fund, an initiative of the German federal ministry for economic cooperation and development (BMZ), managed by KGAL Investment Management on behalf of KfW.

The Moroccan project, which targets million tonnes of annual output, was selected among 98 expressions of interest from seven eligible countries. It is the second project selected under the PtX Development Fund’s first call for proposals, following the Egypt Green Hydrogen project, which was awarded the same amount.

HydroJeel developed the project for the fertiliser producer in its Jorf Industrial Park facility at the port of Jorf-El Jadida. The site will utilise wind and solar power from newly built plants to produce green hydrogen, which will be transformed into green ammonia for use in fertiliser production.

The platform aims to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of green ammonia by the end of 2026, 1 million tonnes by 2027 and 3 million tonnes by 2032 as part of OCP’s broader green ammonia programme. In the initial phase, OCP will off-take the entire output.
