Nuke power to expand further in Asia

SINGAPORE – Asia, which is the site of two-thirds of the world’s 69 nuclear reactors under construction, is set to become the world’s centre of nuclear power, according an expert from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Director General Yukiya Amano said during a lecture engagement in Singapore, the centre of expansion has shifted Asia amid the expanding use of nuclear power.

This development signals a gradual regaining of interest for nuclear energy after the meltdown of Soviet nuclear reactor in Chernobyl in 1986, and the Fukushima nuclear plant reactors meltdown in 2011.

There are currently 439 nuclear reactors in operation around the world, according to statistics from the IAEA.
