Idemitsu and Mitsubishi launches joint study on low-carbon ammonia supply chain initiative
Idemitsu Kosan and Mitsubishi Corporation will jointly study the efficient operation of clean ammonia carriers, transshipment terminals, and participation in ExxonMobil’s low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production project in Baytown, Texas. This initiative aims to create a low-carbon ammonia supply chain by 2029.
Idemitsu has developed an ammonia import terminal at its Tokuyama Complex and, in collaboration with Shunan Industrial Complex, targets over 1 million tons of ammonia for fuel and raw materials by 2030. Recent demonstrations and government support further bolster its carbon-neutral efforts in Japan.
Mitsubishi is converting part of its Namikata LPG terminal into an ammonia hub, supplying approximately 1 million tons annually by 2030 for regional industries. Mitsubishi’s decades of experience position it well to meet decarbonization demands in Shikoku and Chugoku.
Ammonia, emitting no CO₂ when burned, can leverage existing infrastructure for storage and transport, aiding decarbonization across industries. Through their terminals, Idemitsu and Mitsubishi aim to supply low-carbon ammonia to Japan and support a carbon-neutral society.
