Nouryon to build hydroperoxide facility in China

Chemical firm Nouryon will start development of a manufacturing facility at its current site in Ningbo, China, to produce two key intermediates for its organic peroxides business: tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and tert-Butyl alcohol (TBA). Organic peroxides are essential ingredients in the production of polymers and composites.

The manufacturing facility is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2021 and will have a capacity for 35,000 tonnes/year of TBHP/TBA. TBHP is an intermediate in Nouryon’s organic peroxide production process and is also used as a polymerisation initiator for coating resins and other products; TBA is a raw material used both for the production of organic peroxides and other specialty chemicals.

Nouryon has entered into a long-term partnership with Nanjing Jinling Huntsman (NJH), which will provide raw materials for the new facility. NJH will build a storage tank and loading station at its facility in Nanjing for transfer to Nouryon’s Ningbo site.

“This is an important step in integrating our regional supply chain for TBHP, which is currently imported from overseas,” said Johan Landfors, President of Technology Solutions at Nouryon. “Demand for TBHP and TBA continues to rise in Asia, and our new facility will ensure that we can meet that demand for years to come.”

Nouryon CEO Charlie Shaver added: “This new facility represents a significant investment for our organization and supports our strategy of building our presence in attractive growth markets. It also underlines our focus on working with partners, and I am delighted that we are working with NJH for raw material supplies.”
